No-Brainer

As sad as it sounds, I think I've seen just about every American Idol episode, ever. Up until recently, I was very diappointed with this season's crop - I really felt no one really had anything special. The boys are ugly, the girls were blah, and I didn't think anyone was a particularly good singer. Then, two weeks ago, Vonzell Solomon sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," officially proving that she is the only contestant this season worthy of becoming the next American Idol. This week she sang Denise Williams' "Let's Hear It For the Boy," (yes, it's on the Footloose soundtrack) and, once again, was the only one who really gave an American Idol-worthy performance. So, I say Vonzell should be the next American Idol. Go Vonzell!

I'll admit that my early pick was Scott Savol since I liked the tone of his voice despite his being terribly unattractive. Eventually I realized he only sounded good at the beginning because he only sang songs he'd been practicing for years and sounded like crap singing newer-to-him songs. Also, I recently found this Smoking Gun story about him... there's one every season.

I also have become quite fond of her, she's improved the most and from out of nowhere too!

Scott has a decent voice but i'll be shocked if he's around for much longer. BUT the person i can't stand the most is that Constantine guy who thinks he's hot. i can't watch him..his "sexy" smoldering look makes me feel like he's gonna rape me through the tv set...very upsetting.

I haven't been watching this season. The past two seasons have yet to have someone I liked as much as Kelly Clarkson, so I gave up hope. I still like Kelly Clarkson (gasp!) whenever her songs come on while I'm driving I totally belt it out ;)

That said, my 12 year old cousin Hannah would beg to differ with your winner selection. Apparently, Carrie Underwood is the best thing since sliced bread with the middle school girls.

And that guy, Scott. He must have an EXCELLENT voice, because there's no other way someone that unattractive would make it this far on American Idol.

I disagree about the Scott comment. Because of the voting structure of American Idol, I think that an unattractive person is not all that disadvantaged. Staying on doesn't require anyone to get the most votes in any week: they just have to not get the least. I think someone's bad looks, or weight problem, can create an appealing "underdog" status, and a sense that any fans ESPECIALLY have to call and vote for them, since with their bad looks, they're always in danger.

Scott's pretty bad-looking, but Ruben Studdard weighs about 400 pounds, and he won. And won over a fairly...unconventional-looking rival. I think for both guys, they succeeded in part because they were able to gain appeal due to how unlike a conventional "idol" they seemed. Of course, this may only hold true for guys - girl idols still have to be pretty. =)

Sean, I think you have a point there.
If we look at the winners from the first 2 seasons, for example:

Kelly was reasonably attractive and could sing really well. She has trimmed down since she became the first winner, and has got quite a good music career going now.

Both Clay and Ruben were unconventional-looking.
Skinny, cheesy, lanky belter vs. massive, smooth, cuddly crooner. Weird.

After that, things are less interesting to me. I don't think Fantasia was attractive, but I can't remember any of the other finalists either.

The problem I have with Scott is that he looks like a fucking murderer. I mean, he's so unfortunate looking, I don't like to look at him. Therefore, I don't. I guess we should all be pretty thankful not to look like Scott.

i agree that Scott looks like a murderer...he makes me uncomfortable and i just can't watch him no matter how okay he ends up sounding. at least Ruben looked like a big ole teddy bear.

and the Clay Aiken popularity and appeal still boggles my mind...

Kris I'm surprised you don't like this season's group. I think they are way better than last year. No one is half as awkward as JPL or that kid with red hair from last year. And it doesn't hurt that I think Constantine is hot and I think he has a decent voice. Not many people could pull off that Queen song he did this week...Ok I'm officially a dork now.

I do like Carrie. She's cute, she can sing and she takes risks, but she's a little too country for me. I also think I'd like Anwar more without the dreads and Bo if he looked like Constantine, who is now totally overplaying the "sexy"... but hey, if that's how he got girls with his band, he should keep it up to get the girlies to vote for him. I liked Nadia's individuality, but she just wasn't a good enough singer. Now that there are only two girls left, I predict the boys will start dropping like flies. My call: Scott and Anthony's days are numbered, even if he is this season's pseudo-Clay (but at least he is better than the red head kid). I wouldn't say I didn't like them because they seem like nice people and they're not all 16 this year, but I don't think anyone but Vonzell has a good shot at getting anywhere near Kelly.

First off, I think American Idol is a plague and I hate it. The only portion I watch is the try out period, but after this season (where Simon's either become too burned out to be annoyed with anyone OR finally used up all his semi-witty cut-downs) I'm not going to.

However, since I *did* watch THIS season's auditions, I know who you guys are talking about, and I just want to lob a massive complaint against that fuckhead Constantine. He's the epitome of the loser dude who has his loser band in Brooklyn and is never going anywhere because he sucks; the fact that the *idea* of trying out for American Idol ever crossed his mind is reason enough for him to be vanquished from the land of rock and roll, even the kind of pseudo shit rock and roll that he's involved with. I wish that when he'd told his band about his decision, they'd have beaten him to a mushy pulp with their guitars.

Guys like Constantine are a dime a dozen (Bo, anyone?) and the planet needs to be rid of them asap.

America is retarded... or at least the part of it that watches American Idol and votes to save people from getting kicked off instead of voting for the best. I guess because they figure everyone else will vote for the best performer, which is incredibly faulty logic and makes me want to pull my hair out. This week Vonzell sang the hell out of a Christina Aguilera song and was in the bottom three, while Scott stunk up the stage, Carrie went totally country and Bo gave an underwhelming performance but they still got into the top three. The silver lining is that Vonzell was at the top of the bottom and I won't have to listen to Constantine's fake rocker style anymore or watch his gross "sexy" faces.

Does my brain have to be filled every year with 12 more names of Idol contestants? Can't we just refer to them as whore #1, whore #2, etc... or "the fat guy", "the loser rocker" or something to that effect?

That's the price you pay for my lovin'.

Posted by: Kristina at April 28, 2005 08:31 AM

Wow. I can't believe everyone was so anit-Constantine. Apparently I'm alone because he got booted anyway. And what the hell was with Paula and his mom? Intense emotions and massive amounts of painkillers do not mix Paula. Scott does look like a murderer but I think he'll last a few more weeks. If Anthony does bad for one more week he'll get the ax (from the judges, not Scott.)

I was in love with Vonzell from the start and I was heartbroken when she got eliminated. That's OK she is still my idol no matter what anyone says.
