Happy 4th of July!
Happy Independence Day everyone!. Remember what you're celebrating and honor it by registering to vote if you haven't already, by donating to, or volunteering for the Kerry campaign, or just reading the best book ever written about American politics. Oh, and don't forget to get real drunk and watch fireworks.
Happy Fourth. Please take a moment to be thankful for the WAR of Independence, because that is precisely what you are celebrating: WAR.

You are clearly a hypocrite if you enjoy fireworks, grilled food, and three-day weekends, but not armed combat.

Posted by: Jefferson Davis at July 2, 2004 11:37 PMThe American Revolution differs from the current "war" in that it was begun and fought by the people living in the region, not by outsiders that decided it was in their best interest to "free" the citizens of the region. Obviously, not all of the colonists agreed with the separatists, but at least it was fought in the self-interest of the colonies themselves and with the idea(l) of self-rule and democracy rather than externally imposed (or hand selected) rule and gain. America believed in freedom and representation, as well as its own interests and created the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to ensure that its people would not fall under imperialist and parasitic rule again. Not only does it seem that the Founding Father's nightmare has come true in that a great number of those with the right to vote have been effectively disenfranchised (or at least feel that way), but we are ourselves acting in an imperialist and parasitic way towards others; something we have stood against, if only in name, since we declared our independence. Americans need to reclaim their right to be heard and have their wishes and beliefs represented here at home and abroad. I for one, don't like the way my country is being run or what it has become in the eyes of the world, as well as my own. So, I think that in honor of the beliefs and ideals under which our nation was founded, people need to get informed and get out and vote for what they think is right. This isn't about war, it's about sticking up for what you believe is right for yourself and those less empowered than you.
