Helping Children Affected by Natural Disasters

When disaster strikes, it's not shocking that those that suffer the most are innocent children. Whether it's because they can't escape falling buildings or rising water, or because their caregivers are killed or injured or because densely populated areas tend to have a greater percentage of young people, children are the greatest victims of disasters. In the recent Indian Ocean tsunami, nearly 1/3 of the victims were children and thousands were left homeless and orphaned and who knows how many children have been affected by Katrina. If this is any indication of what we can expect from the recent catastrophic earthquake in Kashmir, Pakistani and Indian children are in need of a lot of help. UNICEF is asking for $20 million in donations to address the needs of children in this region alone and could use more to help children affected by disasters around the world, not to mention the children that need aid because of food shortages, poverty, disease, lack of education facilities, war, etc., etc. You can donate to the UNICEF Pakistani relief effort here, you can make a general UNICEF donation here, or you can buy lovely cards and gifts from UNICEF here.
